Oil pulling therapy is a harmless, inexpensive Ayurveda process designed to absorb the toxins and chemicals from the blood vessels in the mouth and tongue. This natural remedy has been used for centuries to get to the root cause of a variety of health problems and help the body in the healing process. The amount of time it takes to notice the effects depends on the individual; however, in time you will have desired results.
The Oil Pulling Process
The process is very simple and only requires edible oils. It is recommended that you use sesame oil or sunflower oil; however, coconut oil is also often used. The oil used does not have to be organic, but it is recommended that it be one that it cold compressed or refined, such as extra virgin, cold compressed coconut oil. To begin the pulling process, take a tablespoon of oil and swish it around in your mouth for 20 minutes. The oil pulling process should be done first thing in the morning or four hours before or after eating; it should not be done with a full stomach. You should continually swish the oil around in your mouth for the full 20 minutes and if you feel the urge to swallow, spit it out and either start over or wait a little bit and start the process over. Some people find it difficult to do the full 20 minutes, so you can gradually increase the time each day. For example, on the first day swish the oil in your mouth for five minutes and gradually increase the time each day until you reach 20 minutes. The oil will turn a milky white or clear and watery, which means the process is working. The oil contains harmful toxins from your body, so you should always spit the oil out, never swallow it. After using the oil, rinse your mouth with water and thoroughly brush your teeth.
The Benefits of Oil Pulling
When oil pulling is done regularly, it helps detoxify your body and although it may not be noticeable, it begins working the first time you do it. The process does not kill the germs in your mouth, but instead draws the toxins out of the crevices between gums, teeth and the tongue. Oil pulling is extremely beneficial for healing oral infections, preventing bad breath, cleaning and whitening teeth and healing gums. One of the best oral benefits of oil pulling is its ability to repair loose teeth. It can also treat and prevent gum disorders, such as gingivitis. Oil pulling is an excellent remedy for a vast array of oral health problems as well as treating conditions, such as high blood pressure, kidney disease, bronchitis, allergies, headaches, female health problems and skin disorders.
It is important to note that if you have excessive toxins in your body, when you first begin the oil pulling process you may experience some detoxing symptoms. Symptoms may include mucus, headaches, skin breakouts and/or congestion. These symptoms are usually mild and will go away as your body rids itself of the toxins. Most people immediately notice whiter teeth and will begin to notice other benefits within a few days. However, the most optimum results may not be noticeable for about two weeks.
